Turkey stew is a classic dish that has stood the test of time, loved for its hearty and wholesome qualities. Whether it's a chilly winter evening or a cozy family dinner, a warm bowl of turkey stew has the power to soothe the soul and fill the belly. Its roots can be traced back to rustic kitchens, where resourcefulness and a commitment to using every part of the bird gave birth to this flavorful tradition.

The dish is a harmonious blend of tender turkey meat and a rich, savory broth that's often thickened to perfection. The choice of vegetables and seasonings can vary, but one variation that truly shines is the addition of mushrooms. Mushrooms not only impart a wonderful earthy flavor to the stew but also enhance its nutritional value. They have a unique ability to absorb the delicious flavors of the stew, making each bite an exquisite experience.

Creating the perfect turkey stew with mushrooms is an art, where various ingredients come together to form a delightful symphony of flavors. The turkey meat, often sourced from different parts of the bird, contributes varying textures and tastes to the stew. The dark meat is succulent and rich, while the white meat is tender and delicate. Combining both types of meat ensures a well-rounded flavor profile.

The mushrooms, on the other hand, bring a depth of umami that complements the turkey beautifully. Their earthy and slightly nutty taste melds seamlessly with the savory broth, creating a marriage of flavors that's a pure delight for the palate. Moreover, mushrooms are a fantastic source of essential nutrients, making this stew not only delicious but also nutritious.

Ingredients

  • turkey breast - 226g
  • champignon - 3 cup pieces (468g)
  • onion - 1 medium (94g)
  • garlic - 4 clove (12g)
  • whipping cream - 1 cup, fluid (238g)
  • extra virgin olive oil - 2 tbsp (27g)
  • dried rosemary - 1 tsp (1.2g)
  • oregano - 1 tsp, ground (1.8g)
  • sea salt - 1 tsp (6g)
  • black pepper - 0.5 tsp, ground (1.2g)

Cooking steps

1.) In a well-heated pan, add two generous tablespoons of olive oil, and place the thoroughly washed and dried turkey breast into it.

2.) When the turkey breast takes on a golden hue, remove it from the pan and introduce the mushrooms. For this recipe, we've opted for versatile button mushrooms, but you can easily swap them for oyster mushrooms or even wild forest mushrooms to impart an even more intense flavor to the dish.

3.) After the mushrooms have reduced in size and their released moisture has evaporated, transfer them from the pan and add finely chopped onions and garlic.

4.) Sauté the onions and garlic for a few minutes, and then reintroduce the previously cooked turkey breast and mushrooms.

5.) We season with a tantalizing blend of salt, pepper, fragrant rosemary, and aromatic oregano. To elevate the flavors, we pour in a cup of water, sealing the pan with a lid for a symphony of taste.

6.) We let it simmer over medium heat for 20-30 minutes, and when the initially added water has reduced by half, we introduce the creamy richness of whipping cream.

7.) After the stew has simmered for a few minutes, we sprinkle in some finely chopped parsley and gracefully remove it from the heat.
